Harrisburg, Pa. (AP) – TV icon Oprah Winfrey endorsed Democrat John Fetterman in a hotly contested Senate race in Pennsylvania on Thursday, rejecting Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz, who helped make her a star two decades ago. as a regular guest on the daytime talk show.
Until now, Winfrey had said she would leave the election up to Pennsylvanians, but she changed that position in an online conversation. Voting in next Tuesday’s election.
“Citizens of Pennsylvania and I said of course it is, but I will tell you all this, if I lived in Pennsylvania I would cast my vote for John Fetterman for a number of reasons,” Winfrey said. To urge listeners to vote for Democrats running for governor and Senate in various states.
The Pennsylvania seat has been seen as a pick-up opportunity for Democrats in the evenly divided Senate for months.
Polls show a close race between Fetterman and Oz, a renowned heart surgeon endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
In a sign of how high the stakes are, Trump will return to Pennsylvania on Saturday to campaign for Oz President Joe Biden And former President Barack Obama will campaign for Fetterman on the same day.
After 5 years and 55 episodes, Oz left Oprah’s show to start his own daytime TV show, which ran for 13 seasons before moving from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to run for the Senate.
The seat is being filled by retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.
