In the past 24 hours, there have been several “effective immediately” media splits: NBC Universal CEO Jeff Shell was the first domino to fall, followed by Tucker Carlson at Fox News and Don Lemon at CNN. All for the same issue.
All of these media companies act like they’re caught unawares, but our media creates (and sometimes rewards) a toxic culture of sexism and a culture of sexism. For example, I can go to any media company and identify problematic employees within days. I suspect that any woman who has experienced sexual harassment in the workplace would do the same. One can say that we are “professionals” now. So it baffles me, and with some, I can’t believe that people who pay millions of dollars a year to run an organization can’t see these things coming. They are aware of the problem but don’t care until it becomes a problem for their business.
A short tour of our media that resulted in the shooting of three people in the past 24 hours.
Comcast Shell said it violated company policy and did not say much other than that the layoff is “effective immediately.” Shell’s split follows an investigation by outside consultants.
Things became a little clearer on Monday when the CNBC attorney was anchored Hadley Gamble accused Shell of sexual harassment and gender discrimination.
Comcast called this “inappropriate behavior with a female employee.” Apparently, an investigation by outside counsel found evidence that “proved the charges.”
In order for targeted harassment, such as sexual harassment and sexism, to be proven, things usually have to be bad.
According to unnamed sources who spoke to The Wall Street Journal, NBCUniversal does not plan to pay Shell. This encouragement can be a good start to ending sexual harassment and misperception. Comcast said Shell was fired for good reason.
Shell only served as CEO for three years.
The thing is, NBC has a history of a culture of sexual harassment. They fired both Matt Lauer and Mark Halperin after sexual harassment reports, and Halperin had additional sexual assault allegations.
In the year In 2016, they even hired a sports commander. Mike Tirico Even after “several public reports of stalking and sexual harassment of his female colleagues since the 1990s.
The issue is bigger than one person; It always was. And it can be solved better than that.
On Fox News, they Suddenly dumped cash cow Tucker Carlson On Monday, although they were promoting his show earlier tonight.
Tucker has gotten the network into all kinds of legal trouble and has been fighting behind the scenes with management. But as you can see, this separation by Discrimination lawsuit filed by Abby GrossbergA former producer and concern about Tucker’s cover-up (read: whitewashing) 1/6 attacks and conspiracy theories.
Tucker has a long and sordid history of misogyny, on which I have already demeaned myself to offer a brief note.
And then, also on Monday, CNN fired Don Lemon after 17 years at the network. The network’s statement did not elaborate on why, but it followed several sexist comments and reports that Lemon was abusive to female co-stars.
“Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we are grateful for his contributions over the past 17 years,” CNN CEO Chris Leach said in a memo to employees. “We wish him well and encourage him in his future endeavours.”
However, that cool of neutrality didn’t last as soon after, Lemon was blasting the network on Twitter, saying, “Cut off by CNN. I’m shocked. After 17 years at CNN, I thought someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly. I’ve never been given a hint that I can’t do a job I love in the network.
CNN responded that this was not the case and that Lemon’s statement was incorrect. He said he was given the opportunity to meet with management, but decided to release a statement on Twitter instead, perhaps a smart move given the men’s rights direction of Incel, the social media app under Elon Musk.
Brian Friedman, the remaining Hollywood contenderIt also hosted Chris Cuomo’s exit.
According to the source, Lemon was fired without reason Deadline.
Multiple outlets initially reported that Lemon still had an estimated $20 million left on his contract through 2026, but that word was dropped without comment. It’s not clear how much money is left on Lemon’s contract, but if he is fired without cause, there’s a good chance he’ll get a lot more.
Years ago, when Fox was first accused of sexual harassment, I wrote that they weren’t the only outlet, that it was actually systemic in the media. Sure, Fox News celebrates the oppressive patriarchy that enables sexual harassment and workplace violence, but gender-based violence against women happens everywhere.
Soon after that, the stories started pouring in and really didn’t stop. Again and again a man does horrible things, a man damages a woman’s work, a man harasses a woman at work, a man uses his power in the workplace to sexually assault an unwilling man, and again and again the man commits sex. As the Golden Parachute flew out the door.
A man is paid the whole package – a lot of money, by the way – for the sex predator, for our “inappropriate” media like to call it.
When people are paid tens of millions of dollars to be “fired”, the firing method is not really working as a deterrent. While those who have been laid off can argue that they are “cancelled” and can’t be the center of the universe for receiving tens of millions of dollars for their work, it is very difficult to make that argument in court. Polls, especially when many of the same people see raising the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour as a big deal for corporations.
The federal minimum wage is $7.25.
Don Lemon, for example, earned $4 million a year at CNN.
Tucker Carlson reported Earning 8 million dollars a year At Fox, however, he inherited tens of millions of dollars, published successful books and built a brand empire for himself.
The entire entertainment business is rife with exploitation, sexual abuse, and sexism. The only way to clean it up is to spend the company’s money on hiring and retaining people who have made it clear that they have problematic views.
Tucker Carlson’s thoughts on child marriage prevention and vocabulary, how he enjoys the fantasy of 14-year-old girls being lesbians at boarding school as long as she’s not his daughter To describe Martha Stewart’s daughter is enough to warn anyone who is qualified to earn the salary paid by the people in charge at Fox News. It can be a problem.
Carlson’s team is alleging that he kept Nancy Pelosi in a bathing suit around his office as a “joke” (because sexualizing female politicians in the newsroom is a sexist response to their power and trying to undermine it) and just questions why she’s still hired.
Certainly such a policy won’t expose everyone, but it’s a good start. If networks can’t see these things coming, they just need to elevate some women who have been sexually harassed to spot the early warning signs. They are not hard to catch once you get past them.
So, it’s only been 24 hours for sexual harassment and sexual harassment in the media.
A hostile work environment poisoned by tragedy and sexual abuse affects us all. It’s not related that this same media has been covering abortion for decades on the issue of whether or not the government should restrict gun rights without realizing that women are not inanimate objects and have rights. Human rights experts say it includes safe access to the fetus.
