President Biden announced new legislation requiring airlines to compensate passengers for delayed or canceled flights.
Video of President Biden:
President Biden said:
Later this year, my administration will propose historic new legislation that would require all U.S. airlines to pay, not voluntarily, for meals, hotels, taxis, shares or — and fees — and cash miles and travel vouchers. They are responsible for the cancellation or delay. And that’s all about recouping the cost of your ticket. Airline passengers in Canada, for example, in the EU and elsewhere get these compensations and guess what, it works. If the European Union requires airlines to compensate travelers for flight delays, the number of flight delays has fallen, a study suggests.
I appreciate Secretary Buttigieg’s leadership on this issue, and I hope the Department of Transportation moves as quickly as possible to implement this new law. It is important. I know these things may not matter to the rich, but they matter a lot to middle-class families and people struggling to get into the airline industry in the first place.
I discuss how this new law represents good government in PoliticusUSA’s daily newsletter, You can register over here.
Biden is putting people first with these new laws. The airline industry isn’t happy about compensating passengers for missed or delayed flights, but the president was right. Once the airlines have to pay passengers for not delivering what their customers paid for, they will have an incentive to improve their performance.
The new law is an example of the Biden administration putting people first, and that’s why it was elected after four years of being ignored by the American people and paints the choices voters will have next year in a very positive light.
